Let me take a selfie?

Today was a good day. I’ve had a really busy last week, with my college event lingering like Satan above my head to all the friends who were waiting (and still are) for me to catch up.

The event went AWE-FRIKING-SOME. The audience said I gave a reverberating welcome speech, full of pithy and vigor. Woot Woot!

As for the ‘friends catching up’ thing. Ahhh, we all know how bad I am at socializing. But I did manage to go for pizza with a friend. Which was fine and all.

Now, let’s get to the point.

I’m not very active on social media, but I do  bump across photographs of various girls in ..umm ..peculiarly scrunched faces. Two words I hate:

1) Pout.
2) Selfie.

Combine both of them, and you get a deadly equation:

Pout+Selfie=17412894723852859 Instagram Likes.

I’m not being narcissistic or condescending here, but it saddens me to see the virtual non-existence of natural smiles. What happened to “Say Cheeeeeseee?” How did it get replaced with, “Make Pooouuuutttt?”

I see carefully crafted poses practiced a thousand times in front of the mirror. It’s like people are so much into aiming for perfection that they’ve forgotten what it’s like to be Raw. To be Crude. To be Imperfect.

Everything is revolving around selfies these days. Two things prompted me to write this. One, I saw an advertisement of a cellphone today. It said, “Here’s the new ‘XXXXX’ phone specially designed to take ‘Perfect Selfies.’ ”
Gone are the days when people checked the RAM or the OS of the phone people.

Two, while gorging myself on pizza today, I picked up my friend’s cellphone and was almost going to take a picture when she says, “Aakansha taking a selfie-now that’s something rare to watch. You would never make a pout, would you?!”

I rolled my eyes.

Understand this- I’m not condemning the idea of poses, but there’s a limit to everything. The line has been crossed.

Either something is terribly wrong with my generation or something is terribly wrong with me. All THIS, the excessive self-obsession may seem futile and innocuous at the moment, but I fear what lies ahead.

Girls are getting OBSESSED to the point where it’s getting downright annoying. If the selfie isn’t perfect-it’s damnation. Hanging out is more for Snapchats and less for interacting. The thing that bothers me is-why isn’t anyone else seeing this? Why can’t anyone else realise what’s wrong?

Tell me fellow bloggers- Don’t you think a picture when clicked by someone else is much more natural and prettier? Think about it. I don’t even remember when was the last time a stranger asked me, “Ma’am ..would you please take a picture of us?”

They all just stick to each other and click a picture of their heads.

Anyway, I’m a sucker for natural smiles and giggles and kisses and not hugs. (Hugs are awkward.)

I’m surrounded by pouts and duckfaces. But I still grin with my 32 teeth. 😀 (Wait, I guess I should count.)

STAY RAW. STAY BEAUTIFUL.

  1. Staying imperfect with an expression of our own is always the perfect one, there is no doubt about that. Some people realize it early, some people realize it late, but they do realize it some point or the other! Nice write up 🙂 32 teeth already, yeh kaise hua 😀

    • I guess I realised it too early. -,-
I’ve started getting irritated from attaining physical perfection.

      Thank you. :’)

Pata nahi. 😛 Bas bol dia, I guess I’ll have to count, really. LOL. 😛

  2. I hate pouted selfies too! If it’s teenage kids, I kind of ignore it .. As All generations come up with some stupid norm at that age.. May be this is the one now. Watching my friends do it make me feel irritated, way old and out of place. The pictures look so artificially yucky.

    • I know. I can empathise with you at this point. I too feel very uncomfortable and out of place amongst so many pouts and ‘artificial’ smiles. Ugh.
My generation is weird and annoying and something is really really wrong with it.

  3. It always seems like everyone wants to take ten million selfies a day! At least you know you’re not alone.
And there is a bit of hope- it tries to spell correct selfies to selfless! 🙂

    • Yes absolutely. I’m glad I’m not alone in this ‘anti-selfie-pout-‘ thing. 😛

Hahahahaha that’s such an awesome thing to observe. 😛 Damn you auto-correct!

  4. I agree with you, Aakansha. I don’t mind a few selfies snapped here and there, as memories of the people you’ve spent time with or places you’ve gone. Pictures are worth 1,000 words. But that can go both ways – a self-adorning selfie is worth 1,000 words too…
What stinks is when people make pictures more about their looks than about the people they’re with. :/

And yes, I hate the “pout” thing…. How did that even come about? Dumb, dumb, dumb. SMILE, PEOPLE. SMILE THE BEAUTIFUL SMILE GOD HAS GIVEN YOU.

    • I know, right? It’s so exasperating. :/ People have forgotten to smile, like a normal beautiful human being. Everything is so artificial these days.

I’m glad there are girls who share my psyche. I was starting to lose hope.

  5. Found your post via community pool and I love your message about staying beautiful and raw.
Perhaps, however, one thing to consider is *why* girls are uncomfortable with their imperfections. I think we can agree that from a young age girls are taught that they need to be flawless, photoshopped, beautiful, sexy, cute, fun, etc, etc. the list goes on and on.
I’m not sure whether these pouters deserve our annoyance as you suggest, or our pity… (maybe both?) Just something to consider…

    • I completely agree with you. I see 12-14 year olds striving for a perfect everything. And I also blame the society for establishing all the wrong credentials for beauty. I don’t even understand why girls are expected and required to have a perfect everything.
Yeah, I think they deserve our annoyance and pity both.

I wish the world was a simpler place. Gah!

  6. As I guy I find the fake pouting selfie face seen on social media ad nauseam a huge turn off. There’s nothing better than a natural smile that is a reaction to someone else rather than a way to get likes.

  7. “Pouting” is considered sexy. Like I said, “considered” only by the people who do the same. The rest, like us find it stupid. If we tell them to smile, they would give us a disgusted look which we give when we see them pouting, the problem being they think that “pouting is the new smiling”, which is just not true.

And no, we can’t change that habit of people, because they forgot the “smile-for-the-camera” thing totally. But let’s just appreciate the people who smile, show their real beauty.

Nicely written. Keep Writing and yeah, keep smiling too.
    Take Care. 🙂

  8. Okay, I have been known to take the occasional picture of myself *guilty* 😦

BUT, it drives me up a wall when girls pout instead of smile. And one of my biggest pet peeves of the online world is when people take a picture WITH OTHER PEOPLE and call it a SELFie.

    • I’ve seen your instagram Kassie and had I found you annoying I wouldn’t have hit the follow button.
I’m not saying to NOT CLICK your own pictures, but just like you said, there’s not a fine but a BIG line between loving yourself to take enough pictures and OBSESSED with yourself . Let’s exclude even that, it’s their phone, they can click as many pictures as they want. But the pout and the duckface is what gets me on my nerves.

Everything, I mean everything is about pictures these days. People go out for the purpose of uploading and getting LIKES instead of having actual fun.

I swear, I was once at a coffee shop with this friend of mine and I’d like to say she’s a professional pouter and ‘Selfie-Clicker’ and in our hour long session there came a time when I was just sitting and watching the hustle of the city outside while she clicked selfies with different poses and pouts.

All I want to say is, something is really really wrong with the people of our generation. And not just the girls, believe me, I’ve seen BOYS pouting. It’s gotten out of control.

And I believe there’s a lot of fault of these extremely good mobile cameras where you can click pictures on the go. Had we still have the culture of carrying a CAMERA to click pictures, we wouldn’t have been seeing a selfie clicked every nanosecond.

      • I LOVE that you are so in tune with the world around you. It’s an amazing trait that much of our generation lacks. The camera was designed to capture memories and show the beauty to others. I don’t think selfies can really do that. I love nature photography and statement photography, and that’s what I would really like to do upon graduation, at least part time. I think that the phone camera is really convenient for snapping unexpected moments, but it shouldn’t be used to determine the level of self-confidence in young people.

        • Thank you so much. That’s the example of a true compliment. I’ll remember this. :’)

You’re absolutely right. The whole concept of a ‘photograph’ was to capture a moment, which in other ways, was impossible. That’s why I said, people no more use it for capturing moments and making memories, it’s more about how PERFECT is it for your Facebook profile picture.

  9. Stay raw, stay beautiful- I love that! I went on a mini-rant about this the other day on Facebook. Duckface makes me twitchy. Why on earth would you pose like that on purpose? Reebok started a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #BreakYourSelfie. I wish people would get back to natural, smiling pictures with no pouts, no duck faces, and no filtering!

    Liked by 1 person

    • Absolutely. That pose is neither appealing to the eye nor logical in ANY WAY. Girls have forgotten how to smile, let alone make fun faces in happy moments. Everything is revolving around that stupid pout and duckface and perfection. Gah! It’s so annoying. 😦

  10. As usual your impeccably written thoughts amaze and astound me. You capture your subject well and your views are fresh and inspiring. When you are famous (not that you are not famous now! I mean even more famous) and have your own column in an up-market journal, I will think to myself “Well-deserved!”
